CAC Calculator (Customer Acquisition Cost)

GuildOfMarketing tool calculates basic and blended CAC, payback and LTV to CAC ratio. The calculator helps quickly explain customer acquisition economics to marketing directors or investors.

Enter Your Data

Add marketing, sales and customer success expenses, number of customers, average revenue and margin. This allows you to see the real cost of acquiring one customer and the payback period..

CAC ? Shows how much it costs to acquire one new customer including marketing, sales and success.
$0
Blended CAC ? Blended CAC shows the average cost of acquiring one active customer when counting the entire campaign reach.
$0
Payback, months ? Calculated as CAC / gross profit per customer per month. The lower the value, the faster the scaling.
LTV / CAC ? Helps properly justify budgets. Less than 3 signals risky economics.
Recommended CAC ? LTV divided by target ratio. If actual CAC is higher — need to optimize channels.

CAC Formulas and How to Present Them

CAC = (Marketing + Sales + Success) / New Customers

Use the same period for expenses and customer count. Before showing CFO, add a note about which budget items are included.

Blended CAC = (Marketing + Sales + Success) / All Customers from Campaign

  • Payback = CAC / (Average Check × Margin).
  • LTV / CAC = LTV ÷ CAC.
  • Recommended CAC = LTV ÷ target LTV/CAC.

When to Calculate CAC

  • Before scaling budget: check payback and LTV/CAC.
  • After pricing or tariff changes: new ARPU will change the acceptable CAC.
  • Together with ROMI/ROI: this shows short and long-term payback horizons.

How to Reduce CAC

  • Focus on channels with lowest CPL, confirmed by lead quality.
  • Onboarding changes: customer success automation reduces fixed costs.
  • Shorten sales cycle: response speed directly affects deal cost.

Extended Explanations

Customer Acquisition Cost is the main KPI for marketers and product managers who defend budgets to top management. A common mistake is not including sales and customer success expenses in the formula, which makes CAC look underestimated.

GuildOfMarketing recommends keeping a log of each calculation: period, market, customer type, campaigns, macro conditions. After a few months, you can build a dashboard that instantly shows which channels violate target CAC.

  • Combine CAC with LTV to determine which segments to scale.
  • Compare blended CAC with basic to see the effect of retention activations.
  • Use CAC as a KPI for marketing, sales and customer success simultaneously.

FAQ

Answers to the most common questions

Why add sales and success expenses?

Without these items, CAC shows only the marketing part and doesn't reflect the real amount the company spends to acquire a customer.

Why calculate blended CAC?

It shows how retention campaigns offset CAC. If blended is significantly lower — it means marketing works well with the base.

What LTV/CAC is considered healthy?

For SaaS and services, the target is 3:1 or higher. In highly competitive niches, 2:1 is acceptable if growing fast with investor backing.

What to Do with the Data
